A James Swan timber framing 1 1/4" chisel with protective leather edge guard. Swan made super quality edge tools and were noted for their huge variety of chisels. This is one of those quality tools. The chisel is called a bevel back style and is massive for heavy use. These chisels were used to make joints in timbers and woodworking cabinet frames. The hickory handle with metal ring allowed the user to use a mallet and pound on the chisel without damaging the handle.
